About Us
Empowering the U.S. Department of State with Data Science and AI
Athyn Insights Incorporated (Aii) was started in 2021 with a singular mission to enhance the data science capabilities of the Department of State. We are a woman-owned, socially disadvantaged small business focused entirely on data science for the Department of State. The Department has publicly committed to AI through its Enterprise Data and AI Strategy. We are here to put that commitment into action.
People Matter Most
A platform—even one powered by AI—provides no value on its own. It takes smart people with vision to use it to solve problems. The Department has many of those people. You can teach someone Python or GenAI in months, but you can't teach decades of experience inside the Department. Our team includes former Foreign Service Officers and DoS-savvy technologists who understand how State actually works—the processes, the politics, the mission. That knowledge is what makes the difference between a tool that sits unused and one that gets adopted across 30+ bureaus.
Where We Operate
We see ourselves at the meeting point between top-down and bottom-up efforts in advancing data and AI capabilities. We're scrappy enough to solve small, real-world problems now—and we proactively build infrastructure to support future technology and enterprise solutions. That balance is what lets innovation move at a blistering pace.
From Within the Ranks
Finding people who understand both data science and how the Department of State works is hard. Our core team includes former Foreign Service Officers who spent years inside State. That domain knowledge—understanding how bureaus operate, what the real pain points are, how to navigate the organization—is irreplaceable. You can teach someone Databricks in a week, but you can't teach them how State actually functions.
Proven Results
We measure success by adoption and impact. Our platforms have grown from concept to serving hundreds of users across 60+ countries and 30+ bureaus. This isn't about pilots that fizzle out; it's about building systems that people actually use.
For example, we built and maintain a data science platform now in use across the Department of State, with plans to expand to other U.S. federal agencies. Leveraging Azure AI Services and OpenAI models, we harness the power of GenAI Computer Vision, Document Intelligence, AI Speech, Vector Embedding, RAG, and more to develop impactful solutions. The platform's architecture, security features, and proven track record demonstrate our ability to deliver production-ready solutions that scale.
Just Data Science
We're not trying to be everything to everyone. We focus on data science, AI, and machine learning. That focus keeps our skills sharp in a field that changes fast. Every project makes us better at the next one.
Passion That Pushes Through
New technology adoption brings hard steps: IT governance, procurement, change management, training. What gets teams through is passion—for the mission, for the problem, for getting tools into users' hands. That passion inspires us and the people we work with. We bring it to every engagement.
Bias Toward Action
We're committed to experimentation and deployment, not just analysis. We prioritize user value over technical perfection—if a solution works for the people who need it, that's what matters. User experience is critical because the most technically sophisticated tool is useless if people can't or won't use it. We focus on making tools intuitive and accessible rather than getting lost in deep technical details that don't improve the end-user experience. Our approach is to build, test, deploy, and iterate based on real feedback from real users. We measure success by whether tools get adopted and solve actual problems, not by how elegant the code is or how comprehensive the documentation looks.
